Gold Board Donates Pickups and GHC 5 Million to Bolster NAIMOS Operations

The national effort to combat illegal mining received a significant boost today as the Ghana Gold Board (GOLDBOD) presented five new Toyota Hilux pickup vehicles and a cheque for GHC 5 million to the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS).

Described as a “game-changer,” the donation is expected to strengthen field operations, enhance mobility, and fund critical interventions within Ghana’s mining communities.

Speaking at the brief ceremony, the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Hon. Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah (MP), hailed the donation as a testament to the Gold Board’s commitment to sustainable and responsible mining. He stated that the move demonstrates GOLDBOD’s vested interest not only in gold trading but also in ensuring that Ghana’s resources are extracted in a manner that protects forests, rivers, and livelihoods.

“This collaboration proves that GOLDBOD is serious about responsible sourcing. We are working with multiple ministries and agencies to track excavators, prosecute offenders, and restore devastated lands,” he added.

Hon. Buah revealed that over 5,500 hectares of forest land have already been degraded by illegal activities, adding that the government has invested heavily in reclamation efforts. He reassured the public that the government is not against mining but is committed to ensuring every ounce of gold extracted in Ghana can be traced to a responsible and legal source. “Together, we will turn our waters blue, our forests green, and ensure that Ghana benefits fully from its mineral wealth,” he added.

On his part, the Chief Executive Officer of the Gold Board, Mr. Sammy Gyamfi, explained that the donation aligns with the institution’s mandate to safeguard the country’s natural resources while supporting national development.

“Yes, we want gold,” he stated, “but we want gold that is mined and sourced responsibly. This enhances the nation’s reputation, preserves our environment, and protects future generations.”

Mr. Sammy Gyamfi noted that while NAIMOS has been leading the charge against illegal mining in collaboration with security agencies, it requires more resources to consolidate its gains. He emphasized that the Goldbod is determined to be more than a regulator by positioning itself as a development partner, investing directly in sustainable initiatives and government-led reforms such as cooperative mining schemes and the government’s reclamation efforts.

The ceremony concluded with the symbolic presentation of vehicle keys and the cheque. Both Hon. Buah and Mr. Gyamfi pledged their continued collaboration and called on all stakeholders, including chiefs, miners, and local authorities, to support the government’s efforts
