NAIMOS officer dies, four others injured in accident at Obuasi

A military officer assigned to the National Anti-illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) has died after the team’s vehicle was involved in a devastating crash. Four other officers sustained severe injuries and were rushed to the Obuasi Government Hospital before being transferred to the Anglogold Obuasi Hospital for further treatment.

The incident occurred late Wednesday as the officers were returning from an operation at a disputed mining concession in Anyankyerim.The area has been overtaken by illegal miners in recent weeks. Witnesses said the team’s vehicle lost control and somersaulted multiple times on the stretch between the Anyankyerim community and Airport Road.

Tensions surrounding the concession have been rising. The site, owned by Mining and Construction Services Limited, has been forcefully occupied by miners who insist the land was allocated to them by the NDC government. Their activities are said to be backed by influential political actors.

The NDC Vice Chairman for the Obuasi West Constituency, Alhaji Zamba, has even appeared in a viral video asserting ownership of the concession.
Daniel Krobea Asante, Assembly Member for the Aketechieso-Amamuom-Anakyirem Electoral Area, has outlined the chain of events that led to the tragic accident, describing the escalating dispute as a growing threat to security in the area.
