Ghana Chamber of Mines hails removal of VAT on exploration activities

The Ghana Chamber of Mines has welcomed the Government of Ghana’s decision to abolish Value Added Tax (VAT) on exploration activities, describing the move as timely and critical to safeguarding the country’s long-term mineral prospects.

The commendation was delivered at the 11th Ghana Mining Industry Awards (GMIA) held at the Mövenpick Hotel in Accra, where the Chief Executive Officer of the Chamber, Ing. Dr. Kenneth Ashigbey, praised the policy as a strong signal of government’s commitment to maintaining Ghana’s appeal as a competitive mining investment hub.

Addressing participants at the event, Dr. Ashigbey explained that the VAT removal contained in the 2026 Budget goes beyond routine policy adjustments, noting that it serves as a powerful incentive to encourage fresh exploration, reduce investment risks, and support the replenishment of Ghana’s mineral resources.

“This intervention is not just an administrative adjustment; it is a bold commitment to attracting new investments,” he noted. “It will sustain Ghana’s mineral reserves and reinforce the country’s competitiveness as a mining destination.”

He further indicated that the Chamber remains optimistic that the consultative approach that led to this decision will also shape deliberations on the mining royalty regime, resulting in policies that balance national interests with industry sustainability.
