Chinese Embassy Urges Ghana to Treat Galamsey as a Serious National Issue

The Chinese Embassy in Ghana has reiterated its commitment to supporting the country’s efforts in combating illegal mining, also known as galamsey.

Speaking at a training workshop on “Green Mining: Best Practices for Responsible Reporting” organized by the Ghana News Agency in Peduase on December 11, Chinese Ambassador to Ghana, Tong Defa, called for a stronger national effort to tackle the issue.

He stressed that both the government and citizens must approach the galamsey problem with greater urgency, warning that without a united front, the issue would continue. The Ambassador also encouraged the media to provide accurate and balanced coverage of Ghana–China relations, advising against blaming the entire Chinese community for the actions of a few individuals involved in illegal mining.

Ambassador Tong reaffirmed China’s support for Ghana in promoting responsible mining and protecting the environment, saying, “We support the Ghanaian government in addressing this issue. Ghanaians must take galamsey seriously; without that, there’s no simple solution. We also want to stress that Chinese individuals must act legally.”
