Ghana named UN Sanitation and Waste Management Hub, driven by Zoomlion’s infrastructure – Minister

Ghana’s designation by the United Nations as the Sanitation and Waste Management Hub for West Africa in 2025 is largely due to the sanitation infrastructure developed by Zoomlion Ghana Limited, the Minister for Local Government has said.
Mr Ahmed Ibrahim made this known at a thanksgiving ceremony organised by the Jospong Group on Friday, December 12, in Accra. He explained that the company’s 36 modern waste treatment plants have positioned Ghana as a leader in sanitation in the sub-region.
“In 2025, the United Nations recognised Ghana as the Sanitation and Waste Management Hub for West Africa, largely because of the comprehensive infrastructure built by Jospong and Zoomlion,” the Minister stated.
He cited an official benchmarking visit to South Korea, where Ghana stood out alongside Morocco as the only African countries with advanced, integrated waste management systems. According to him, Korean officials were impressed by Ghana’s recycling plants, composting facilities and medical waste treatment centres.
Mr Ibrahim attributed this success to a strong partnership between government and the Jospong Group, describing the 36 composting, recycling and waste treatment plants as the largest sanitation infrastructure network in West Africa.
He noted that the facilities have addressed local waste management challenges and made Ghana a model for other countries in the region.
The Minister also highlighted the growth of the Jospong Group from a small office in Jamestown to a major African company operating in over 14 sectors, with 78 subsidiaries and presence in more than 24 African countries.
In a welcome address, the Executive Chairman of the Jospong Group, Dr Siaw Agyepong, credited the company’s growth to God and consistent support from successive governments.
He said Zoomlion now operates 36 functional plants covering solid, liquid and medical waste treatment, making Ghana a centre of excellence in sanitation and environmental management.
Dr Agyepong noted that the Group, which started as a small printing press in Jamestown in 1995, now operates in over 25 African countries.
