China Reaffirms Commitment to Sustainable Mining Partnership with Ghana

China has reaffirmed its commitment to working with Ghana to promote sustainable and responsible mining as part of ongoing cooperation in the minerals sector.
The Chinese Ambassador to Ghana, Mr. Tong Defa, made this known at the opening of a three-day workshop for editors and reporters in Peduase, stating that China was ready to deepen collaboration with Ghana to advance green mining practices. He noted that China consistently urges its companies operating in Ghana to comply with local laws and regulations.
Ambassador Tong said China would also support Ghana through knowledge-sharing and technology transfer to improve mining technology, upgrade equipment, reduce costs, increase revenue, and enhance the value of mineral resources. As part of this effort, a China–Ghana Mining Cooperation Roundtable on Sustainable Mining was hosted, bringing together key stakeholders from China to strengthen engagement.
He highlighted the contributions of Chinese mining companies to job creation, community development, and environmental responsibility, citing the Cardinal Namdini Gold Mine operated by Shandong Gold in the Upper East Region and the Wassa Gold Mine of Chifeng Gold in the Western Region as examples.
According to the Ambassador, Shandong Gold has prioritised local employment, with about 94 per cent of its roughly 1,600 contract workers being Ghanaians, while also investing about US$2 million in health, education, environmental sanitation, and community infrastructure. He added that the company had constructed a 25-kilometre public road linking more than 10 communities.
Ambassador Tong also noted that Chifeng Gold has made significant contributions through the Golden Star Community Development Fund, supporting initiatives in agriculture and fisheries.
He said China remains eager to expand cooperation with Ghana in mining, energy, infrastructure, agriculture, and fisheries, with the aim of transforming Ghana’s natural resource endowments into sustainable drivers of national development.
