Minority urges security agencies to focus on galamsey hotspots

The Minority in Parliament has taken a swipe at the joint show of force staged by the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) and the Ghana Police Service, describing the exercise as a misdirected effort and an inefficient use of public resources.
On Thursday, December 11, 2025, the two security agencies organised a public display of arms and tactical equipment in Accra, explaining that the move was intended to signal their preparedness to maintain law and order before, during, and after the Christmas festivities.
However, speaking to journalists on Wednesday, December 17, the Ranking Member on Parliament’s Defence and Interior Committee, Reverend John Ntim Fordjour, contended that such a demonstration would have been more impactful if conducted at identified security flashpoints, particularly illegal mining (galamsey) sites.
He argued that deploying a show of force to these areas would have better reassured affected communities of the government’s resolve to restore calm and address the menace of illegal mining.
“The Executive should not be allowed to take such ill-considered decisions. If you truly want to show force, there are galamsey sites go to those areas,” he said.
