Trade Ministry acquires 40,000 acres to boost Feed the Industry programme

The Ministry of Trade, Agribusiness and Industry has secured 40,000 acres of land from the Yeji Traditional Council to facilitate the rollout of the Feed the Industry programme.

The initiative is a key component of the government’s flagship Feed Ghana Initiative and seeks to boost large-scale agricultural production to ensure a steady supply of raw materials for domestic industries, cut down on import dependence, and strengthen agro-industrial development.

During a working visit to the Ministry by Vice President Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, the Minister for Trade, Agribusiness and Industry, Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare, revealed that the Ministry is collaborating with private sector entities, including GB Foods, to drive the programme.

She further indicated that commercial farming of tomatoes, pepper, and ginger will soon commence on 6,000 hectares of land.

“In September they (G.B Foods) are going to start about 6,000 hectares of tomato, pepper and ginger farm so they use it to feed the industry. We continue to engage traditional leaders for lands. As I speak, we have acquired 40,000 acres of land from the Yeji Traditional Council to promote the Feed the Industry programme because we have some investors who will come, they want litigation-free lands,” she said.

According to the minister, the programme is projected to generate employment, empower local farmers, and strengthen value chain development within the agribusiness sector.
