Ga Mantse to criminalise child fishing that interferes with education

The Ga Mantse, King Tackie Teiko Tsuru II, has revealed plans to outlaw child fishing practices that interfere with formal education within the Ga State.
Addressing the 2026 edition of Kinka Blonya—the annual New Year celebration for children—on Thursday, January 1, 2026, the Ga Mantse stated that once the proposed by-law is enacted, parents who permit or involve their children in fishing activities will face arrest and prosecution.
He explained that the initiative is part of wider measures aimed at protecting the future of children in the Ga State by ensuring greater access to quality education.
“All the traditional authorities in the Ga State have come together to actively promote education. A time is nearing when fishing by children at the expense of education would be criminalised,” he said.
The Ga Mantse also drew attention to ongoing interventions, including the provision of scholarships to nearly one thousand schoolchildren, as a means of fostering socio-economic development in the Ga community through education.
“We are at a point where prioritising education in the Ga state is non-negotiable. We are providing over 1000 scholarships, therefore parents have no excuse to enrol their kids in schools. Let’s all come together and raise the Ga Children for the future,” he added.
