Mahama Sets 30% Renewable Energy Target to Cut Costs and Protect Environment

The President, John Dramani Mahama, says his government is actively working to ensure that renewable energy makes up at least 30 per cent of Ghana’s national energy mix as part of efforts to reduce costs and protect the environment.

Delivering his New Year message at the Presidency in Accra on Thursday, January 1, 2026, President Mahama said the move forms part of a broader national reset aimed at building a sustainable and resilient economy by 2026. He stressed that expanding the use of renewable energy will help Ghana reduce its dependence on expensive power sources while safeguarding the environment.

President Mahama also reiterated his commitment to transforming Ghana’s agricultural sector from subsistence farming into a thriving commercial industry. He said this will be achieved through mechanisation, value addition, and improved market access to make the country more self-sufficient.

The President outlined other key priorities of his administration, including continued digitalisation of schools to ensure that every classroom is equipped with tools for 21st-century learning. He said every child in Ghana deserves access to world-class education, regardless of background.

He further pledged to intensify the fight against corruption, stressing that there will be no sacred cows. According to him, every cedi belongs to the people and must be accounted for.
President Mahama said his administration will also implement recommendations of the Constitutional Review Committee to strengthen the 1992 Constitution and deepen Ghana’s democracy.
