GNPC and SONATRACH Forge Strategic Alliance to Advance African Energy Excellence

The Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC) has formalised a strategic partnership with Algeria’s national oil company, SONATRACH, in a move aimed at strengthening technical excellence and regional collaboration across Africa’s petroleum value chain.

The partnership was sealed through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed on Tuesday, January 6, 2026, in Brazzaville under the auspices of the African Petroleum Producers Organization (APPO). The agreement underscores GNPC’s commitment to enhancing its operatorship capacity while deepening high-impact partnerships with leading National Oil Companies (NOCs) on the continent.

Under the collaboration, GNPC and SONATRACH will promote the exchange of technical expertise and jointly advance Africa’s oil and gas capabilities. Key areas of cooperation include research and development, technological innovation, and the joint management of oil and gas laboratory activities, spanning both upstream and downstream operations. The initiative is expected to strengthen operational efficiency and align both institutions with global industry best practices.

For GNPC, the alliance forms part of a broader strategy to maximise value from Africa’s petroleum resources through innovation and regional synergy. The Corporation’s Research and Technology Centre will play a central role in driving applied research and data-led studies to support exploration and production goals, while also contributing to Ghana’s long-term energy transition agenda.

The MoU was signed by GNPC’s Director of Commerce and Investments, Dr. Krasi Eyiah Kwesi, and SONATRACH representative, Mr. Mustapha Benamara. The ceremony was witnessed by APPO Secretary General, Mr. Farid Ghezali, highlighting the continental significance of the partnership.
The collaboration is expected to reinforce GNPC’s mandate to deliver sustainable growth and long-term value creation, positioning Ghana as a key player in shaping the future of Africa’s energy sector.
