Ghana, Tanzania Strengthen Cooperation on Local Content and Mining Governance

Ghana and Tanzania have renewed their commitment to deepening collaboration on local content development and strengthening mining governance as part of a high-level study tour between the two countries’ mining regulators.
The second day of engagements, held on January 20, 2026, saw a delegation from Tanzania’s Mining Commission hold extensive technical discussions with officials of Ghana’s Minerals Commission. The sessions focused on Ghana’s regulatory and operational frameworks, including Local Content and Local Participation regulations, mineral titles and licensing systems, national mining policies, and the digital Mining Cadastre and Administration System (MCAS), which supports licensing, monitoring, compliance and revenue assurance.
The discussions were chaired by the Deputy Chief Executive Officer in charge of Small-Scale Mining and Industrial Minerals, Mr. Maxwell Klu, on behalf of the Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Isaac Tandoh, with directors and senior technical officers from both institutions contributing to the knowledge exchange.
Dr. Theresia C. Numbi, Chairperson of the Local Content Committee of the Tanzanian Mining Commission, underscored the purpose of the visit, noting that the delegation’s objective is to move beyond policy formulation to the establishment of effective implementation systems that deliver measurable outcomes.
As part of the programme, the Tanzanian team toured the Minerals Commission’s Control and Monitoring Room, where they observed real-time tracking of excavators and earth-moving equipment, as well as digital systems used to monitor operations, production and nationwide compliance, reinforcing transparency and regulatory oversight.
The delegation also paid a visit to the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod), where they were received by the Deputy Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Richard Nunekpeku, and management. The team was briefed on Ghana’s gold trading architecture, regulatory controls and market mechanisms aimed at maximizing in-country value retention.
The visit concluded with a tour of the GoldBod Jewelry Showroom and Production Facility, offering firsthand insight into Ghana’s refining and jewelry manufacturing processes and the country’s progress in downstream value addition.
HThe engagements enabled a comprehensive exchange of best practices in mineral rights administration, digital governance, compliance monitoring and value chain development. Both commissions reaffirmed their commitment to a sustained strategic partnership to advance Africa-led solutions for a transparent, inclusive and locally beneficial mining sector.
