Fisheries Commission Trains North East Fish Farmers to Boost Aquaculture Productivity

The Fisheries Commission (FC) has completed a three-day capacity-building programme aimed at strengthening aquaculture practices among fish farmers in the North East Region. The training, held from 27th –29th January, 2027 at the Regional Coordinating Council (RCC) Conference Room in Nalerigu, was organised under the Resilient Aquatic Food Systems Initiative Project.

A team of technical experts from the Commission led the sessions, including Dr. Lawrence Ahiah, Director of the Fisheries Scientific Survey Division (FSSD); Mr. Gideon Boakye, Head of Aquaculture; Dr. Stanley Hughes-Obresi, Fish Health Manager for the Northern Sector; and Mr. Papa Joe Maale-Adsei, North East Regional Director.
The programme focused on fish feed formulation and fish health management—two critical areas the Commission says are essential for improving growth rates, reducing mortality, cutting production costs, and enhancing overall farm productivity. Participants were drawn from several communities, including Nalerigu, Tombu, Langbinsi, and Nansoni.

According to the Fisheries Commission, the initiative forms part of a broader national effort to promote sustainable aquaculture, create decent employment opportunities, strengthen local livelihoods, and bolster food and nutrition security, particularly within rural communities.
The Commission says it will continue to roll out similar trainings across the country as it works to expand and modernize Ghana’s aquaculture sector.
