Government Moves to Revive VALCO – Lands Minister Discloses

The Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Hon. Emmanuel Armah Kofi Buah, has announced that government is taking concrete steps to revive the Volta Aluminium Company (VALCO) as part of a broader push to strengthen Ghana’s industrial base.
He made the disclosure on January 27, 2026, when the Vice President, Prof. Jane Naana Opoku Agyemang, paid a working visit to the ministry. The visit formed part of the Presidency’s initiative to improve direct engagement with state institutions and assess ongoing sectoral performance.
Prof. Opoku Agyemang explained that her tour of ministries is intended to foster enhanced coordination between her office and key government sectors. She emphasized that such engagements help track progress, identify bottlenecks, and align national priorities across institutions.
Briefing the Vice President, the Lands Minister outlined the ministry’s mandate, the agencies under its oversight, and the operational challenges he met upon assuming office. He noted that one of the critical priorities is repositioning VALCO to deliver greater economic value.
According to him, the government is committed to modernizing VALCO and restoring the company’s central role in Ghana’s industrialization agenda. “VALCO is a quiet lion that can change our country. We have big plans for its revival,” he said.
His comments follow the submission of a report by a 12-member inter-ministerial committee tasked in November 2025 with identifying a strategic investor to partner in VALCO’s redevelopment.
The modernization of VALCO forms a key pillar of the Ghana Integrated Aluminium Development Corporation’s (GIADEC) long-term strategy to build a fully integrated aluminum industry. The initiative is expected to boost VALCO’s production capacity, secure existing jobs, and create thousands of new employment opportunities both directly and indirectly.
