Agric Minister Urges Fertilizer Manufacturers to Leverage Cow Dung for Soil Health

The Minister of Food and Agriculture, Hon. Eric Opoku has encouraged organic fertilizer producers to utilize the abundant cow dung generated at the Ashaiman Tulaku Market.
During a visit to the market on February 2, 2026, he highlighted that the facility produces significant quantities of cow dung that could serve as a valuable input for organic fertilizer production. He noted that this initiative aligns with broader sustainable sanitation efforts aimed at keeping the market clean and improving animal health.
“The cow dung cannot simply remain as waste—it is a resource. Fertilizer manufacturers must pay attention to this place and make good use of it for organic fertilizer production,” he stated.
The Minister further indicated that the ministry will engage fertilizer companies to formally explore ways to harness the cow waste. He stressed that the objective is not commercial gain but rather long-term environmental hygiene, healthier animals, and safer meat for consumers. Utilizing the cow dung, he added, would also ease the challenge of waste disposal while creating potential employment and income opportunities for individuals and businesses.
To support immediate sanitation needs at the market, the Minister donated GHC 30,000 to procure payloader services to clear accumulated waste as preparations begin for long-term solutions.
Additionally, the market authorities will receive a brand-new payloader and a large tricycle to enhance ongoing cleaning and waste management operations.
