Korle Klottey Assembly arrests two over illegal burial activity at Osu Cemetery

Two men have been arrested at the Osu Cemetery for illegally excavating a grave, as part of intensified operations by the Korle Klottey Municipal Assembly to clamp down on illegal exhumations and the unauthorised sale of burial plots.

The arrests were confirmed by Hon. George Abeiku Annan, Assemblyman for the Kinkawe Electoral Area, who worked with the municipal security task force during the operation.

“This action is part of our commitment to restoring order and protecting public cemeteries in the municipality,” he said.

The suspects, Eric Annan and Joseph Donkor, were picked up in the early hours of Friday, 6 February, during a joint operation involving the cemetery sexton and officers from the security task force.

They were subsequently handed over to the Osu Police to assist with further investigations and possible prosecution in accordance with the law.

The arrests come a day after a press conference held on Thursday, 5 February, by the Hon. Municipal Chief Executive, which raised serious concerns about illegal exhumations and the unlawful sale of burial plots at the Osu Cemetery. Following the briefing, the Assembly deployed a dedicated security task force to take control of the facility and prevent further infractions.

The Korle Klottey Municipal Assembly has reaffirmed its zero-tolerance policy towards illegal activities at public cemeteries.

“We will ensure that all illegal and unethical practices are brought to an end,” the assembly stated, stressing its commitment to protecting the dignity of the deceased and preserving the sanctity of burial grounds.
