Ghana Advances Plans for First Marine Protected Areas at Greater Cape Three Points

The Minister for Fisheries and Aquaculture, Hon. Emelia Arthur has announced steady progress toward the establishment of Ghana’s first Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) in the Greater Cape Three Points region, following Cabinet’s approval on 7th October, 2025.

The Minister received members of the Marine Protected Areas Technical Advisory Committee (MPA-TAC) for a briefing on key milestones achieved to date. The session reviewed ongoing work on the national communication roadmap for the MPAs, including development of public-facing materials such as an MPA song sheet and a set of frequently asked questions. The Committee also outlined plans to socialise the strategy with the Ministry of Food and Agriculture and the Fisheries Commission, as well as initiatives to build media capacity through specialised training for selected journalists.

Upcoming outreach efforts will feature targeted engagements with high-profile figures, including the Minister, to deepen public awareness ahead of implementation.
Discussions also covered the broader MPA rollout plan, updates to the governance framework, and progress on the draft management plan. Outstanding activities and next steps were mapped out to guide the next phase of work.
The Minister reiterated Government’s commitment to a transparent and inclusive process that balances environmental protection with the socioeconomic interests of coastal communities.
