World Bank Team Inspects GARID Project Site to Assess Flood Resilience Efforts at Odaw River Channel

A team from the World Bank, including key representatives from the World Bank Ghana Office, recently conducted an inspection tour of the Greater Accra Resilient and Integrated Development Project (GARID) site at Achimota–Abofu. The visit focused on ongoing reconstruction works aimed at strengthening flood resilience along a damaged section of the Odaw River Channel.
The delegation, led by Lia Carol Sieghart, Regional Practice Manager for West Africa, Environmental & Social (E&S) safeguards, and Ruxandra Maria Floroiu, Lead Environmental Specialist and Regional Standards Coordinator, assessed the project’s working environment. They inspected the site camp office and engaged with local residents living along the project corridor to evaluate the implementation of key environmental and social safeguards.
The team expressed satisfaction with the high environmental and safety standards maintained by the contractor and commended the Project Coordinating Unit for their efforts in ensuring these standards are upheld. The team also emphasized the importance of continuing to enforce safeguards to protect the safety and well-being of workers, residents, and the general public.
The GARID project remains committed to enhancing the lives of local communities while prioritizing sustainability and environmental protection across all its sites in Ghana.
