Ablakwa laments rise of ‘greedy graduates’ fueling galamsey

Minister of Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has expressed deep concern about the inappropriate actions of some graduates.
One issue particularly dear to his heart is the involvement of graduates in illegal mining activities, popularly known as galamsey. He noted that these activities are destroying water bodies and degrading the environment, with little thought given to their deadly consequences and the harm caused to future generations.
Speaking at the 87th Speech and Prize Giving Day of Presbyterian Boys’ Secondary School (Presec), Legon, held on the school’s premises on Saturday, November 29, 2025, Ablakwa lamented how the educational system is producing what he described as “greedy graduates.”
“Why is our educational system producing graduates who will destroy our environment, pollute our river bodies, and create a public health crisis for the rest of us, just to advance their greedy galamsey search for gold?” he asked passionately.
Illegal mining damages both the land and water supply. Galamsey activities have significantly depleted Ghana’s forest cover and polluted water bodies due to the crude and unregulated nature of the mining process.
