Agric Minister Assures Resumption of Kpone Irrigation Scheme Works

The Minister for Food and Agriculture, Mr EricOpoku has assured residents of Kpone and surrounding communities that construction works on the long-delayed Kpone Irrigation Scheme will soon resume, following renewed government commitment to complete the project.
Speaking during a working visit to the project site, the Minister said the irrigation scheme remains a critical intervention under government’s agricultural modernisation agenda, aimed at boosting dry-season farming, improving food security, and creating sustainable jobs for the youth.
According to him, outstanding contractual and funding challenges that stalled the project have largely been resolved, and arrangements are underway for contractors to return to site. He indicated that discussions with the Ministry of Finance and development partners had secured the needed resources to continue and complete the infrastructure.
The Kpone Irrigation Scheme, when completed, is expected to provide reliable water supply for year-round cultivation of vegetables, rice, and other crops, covering hundreds of hectares of farmland and benefiting thousands of smallholder farmers in the Greater Accra Region.
The Minister urged beneficiary farmers to remain patient and assured them that government would not abandon the project, stressing that irrigation development is key to reducing dependence on rain-fed agriculture and mitigating the effects of climate change.
Traditional authorities and farmer groups in the area welcomed the assurance and appealed for strict timelines and supervision to ensure the project is completed without further delays.
