Ahmed Ibrahim Closes Nationwide Sanitation and Beautification Exercise Ahead of Christmas
The Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Hon. Ahmed Ibrahim, has brought to a close the nationwide sanitation and beautification exercise rolled out ahead of the Christmas festivities, marking a major push by government to promote environmental cleanliness and public health across the country.
The exercise, which was implemented in collaboration with Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs), traditional authorities, religious bodies and community groups, focused on desilting drains, clearing refuse dumps, sweeping streets, improving public spaces and enhancing the overall appearance of towns and cities. Markets, lorry parks, beaches and other public gathering points were prioritised due to the expected influx of travellers and holidaymakers during the festive season.
Speaking at the climax of the exercise, Hon. Ahmed Ibrahim said the initiative was not only aimed at preparing communities for Christmas celebrations, but also at instilling a culture of cleanliness and civic responsibility among Ghanaians. He noted that poor sanitation remains a major public health concern and stressed the need for sustained efforts beyond the festive period.
The Minister commended local authorities, sanitation workers, security agencies, youth groups and volunteers for their active participation, describing their commitment as critical to the success of the nationwide campaign. He also called on residents to maintain the gains made by disposing of waste properly, avoiding indiscriminate dumping and supporting sanitation enforcement measures at the local level.
Hon. Ahmed Ibrahim reaffirmed government’s commitment to strengthening sanitation management through policy reforms, public education and improved waste management systems, adding that clean and well-kept communities are essential for tourism growth, public health and national development as Ghana welcomes visitors for the Christmas holidays.
