All set for Council of State elections today; 522 to vote in 16 regions

The Council of State elections are scheduled for today, February 11, 2025, across all regional capitals. A total of 522 delegates are expected to cast their votes to select regional representatives for the Council of State. This process is in accordance with Paragraph (C), Clause (2) of Article 89 of the 1992 Constitution.
The Electoral Commission has outlined specific requirements and timelines for the nomination process. Qualified individuals intending to stand for these elections were required to submit their nomination forms between January 28 and January 31, 2025.
Each nomination needed to be proposed and seconded by two registered voters from the nominee’s region and supported by 20 additional registered voters from the same region. The elections will be conducted at designated venues in all regional capitals, as determined and communicated by the Commission.
The Council of State serves an advisory role to the President, and these elections are a critical step in ensuring regional representation within the body.
