Apiate Explosion: We must conduct investigations into the health and safety protocols of mining in Ghana – Samuel Abu Jinapor

Accra, Jan.25 – In the wake of the discussions on the explosion of mining materials in Apiate near Bogoso in the Western Region, the minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Hon. Samuel Abu Jinapor has called for full investigations into the health and safety protocols of the mining industry.
Speaking on Citi TV’s Point of View with Bernard Avle the minister bemoaned that it has become necessary to assess safety protocols at the various mining sites in Ghana to enable policy makers make the right call.

He noted, however, that various investigations has been launched to determine the circumstances that lead to the tragic incidence in Apiate.
“For what has happened in Apiate there are several investigative mandate. The police will investigate road safety protocols and the crime component, the Ghana Fire Service will look into the fire component of and the ministry of Lands and Natural Resources through the Minerals commission and its allies agencies will have to investigate the adherence to the health and safety protocols of this particular incidence”, he said.
The minister also noted that he has taken steps and given directives for the Chief Inspector of mines and the company that manufactures the explosives to be interdicted. The Damango MP believes it is time for the nation to conduct full inquiry into safety protocols and the conduct of mining operations in Ghana.
“We need to conduct an inquiry into the broader issue of health and safety protocols of the mining industry generally and not only in respect to the use, transportation, and manufacturing of explosives but the conduct of mining operations generally as they relate to the health and safety protocols”, he added.
The heavy explosion of the mining component in Apiate has left the town completely destroyed resulting in about 17 casualties and 192 injuries.
Meanwhile, construction works have begun to rebuild the town of Apiate and get the displaced residents back to their homes. The police and the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources are yet to release the findings of their investigation.
