Blue Water Guards launched in Bekwai to protect rivers

The Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah Kofi Buah, has explained that the Blue Water Guard initiative goes beyond the enforcement of environmental regulations and is also aimed at fostering a strong sense of environmental responsibility within local communities.
He observed that the continuous pollution of rivers and other water bodies presents a grave danger to both livelihoods and the natural environment, noting that the engagement of well-trained young people is crucial to addressing and reversing the damage at the grassroots level.
These remarks were delivered on his behalf by the Bekwai Municipal Chief Executive, Salifu Issaka, during the inauguration of the first cohort of Blue Water Guards for the Bekwai Municipal Assembly in the Ashanti Region. According to Mr Buah, the initiative is part of a nationwide effort to safeguard rivers and other vital water resources.
He indicated that the 18 selected beneficiaries have received training to equip them with the capacity to monitor water bodies, report unlawful activities, and work closely with relevant state institutions to support the restoration and protection of rivers.
The Minister further tasked the newly trained guards to recognise the significance of their responsibility in preserving the country’s water resources. He urged them to carry out their duties with commitment, discipline, and integrity, emphasising that the overall success of the initiative would largely depend on their conduct.
Mr Buah also appealed to traditional leaders, opinion leaders, and residents of the Bekwai Municipality to offer their full support and cooperation to the Blue Water Guards as they work to prevent further degradation of rivers and streams.
The launch of the Blue Water Guards initiative in Bekwai is expected to enhance local measures against illegal mining and play a key role in the rehabilitation and long-term sustainability of water bodies within the municipality.
In his remarks, Mr Salifu Issaka said the initiative aligns with broader government interventions aimed at protecting Ghana’s rivers and restoring water bodies that have been severely degraded by galamsey and other environmentally destructive activities. He praised the government for introducing the Blue Water Guards initiative, describing it as a timely and strategic response to the menace of illegal mining.
