COCOBOD explores urgent measures to support cocoa farmers

The Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD), Dr. Randy Abbey, has indicated that the regulator is actively working on urgent measures to assist cocoa farmers who are currently under increasing economic strain.
Addressing the prevailing difficulties in the cocoa sector, Dr. Abbey admitted that producers nationwide are facing tough conditions and assured that steps are being taken to provide support.
“We know these are very difficult times for the farmers and I can assure you, we are looking for solutions soon,” he stated.
His remarks come against the backdrop of escalating production costs, climate-related challenges and financial pressures, all of which have negatively affected farmers’ incomes and output in recent years.
Dr. Abbey disclosed that COCOBOD is in discussions with key stakeholders, including government agencies and industry partners, to develop interventions aimed at improving sustainability and reinforcing support structures for cocoa farmers.
Although no specific timelines were outlined, he emphasised that farmer welfare remains a central priority for the Board.
Industry observers suggest that any forthcoming measures may include improved financing models, productivity-enhancing support, and policy reforms targeted at stabilising the cocoa sector, which continues to play a critical role in Ghana’s export economy.
The assurance from COCOBOD comes at a time when farmers are increasingly calling for stronger institutional support to help them cope with rising costs and growing uncertainties in the global cocoa market.
