EPA VOLTA REGIONAL OFFICE HOLDS SECTOR ENGAGEMENT WITH SAND WINNERS ASSOCIATTION

The Environmental Protection Authority in conjunction with the Minerals Commission held a one-day stakeholder sensitization, with the association of sand winners within the Ho and Ho west enclaves at the Regional Head office in Ho.
The meeting was to address issues relating to the operations of sand winners in the region and find lasting solutions regarding some illegal mining activities such as illegal sand winning, failure to reclaim legacy pits amongst others.
Addressing the meeting, Ing. Maxwell Zu-Cudjoe, Ag. Regional Director of the EPA directed executives of the sand winners association to strictly adhere to mining laws and develop reclamation plans.
The Director also announced plans for the first quarter of 2026 to educate land owners, contractors, and association executives on environmental protection and land reclamation.
He again assured the association that the compliance and enforcement team would be more proactive in regulating sand mining activities and enforcing the law.
Mr. Joseph Frimpong, The Regional Director of the Minerals Commission, reiterated the need to increase enforcement regime to ensure sanity within the sector.
He mentioned that the commission is forming enforcement committees across various enclaves in the region which will comprise representatives from Minerals Commission, EPA, MCEs and DCEs of various districts and municipalities.
On the part of the sand winners association, the leader, assured that they were doing everything possible to reclaim every legacy pit on all concessions within the region while taking measures to continue education and sensitization of its members to adhere to mining laws that govern their operations.
