Farmers Day: Agric Minister Commends Farmers for Contributing to National Development

The Minister for Food and Agriculture, Mr. Eric Opoku, has commended Ghana’s farmers and fishers for their crucial contribution to sustaining the country’s food system and driving economic progress, describing them as “the backbone of national development.”

Addressing the 41st National Farmers Day celebration in Ho, he noted that this year’s event carries added significance as the first to be held under the President’s renewed mandate and as a celebration hosted in the Volta Region—an area known for its deep agricultural heritage and vast potential.

Reviewing developments over the past 11 months, the Minister highlighted that the Ministry had laid a solid foundation for agricultural transformation, anchored in scientific innovation and strong collaboration with research institutions. He reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to safeguarding food and nutrition security nationwide.

Mr. Opoku explained that the Feed Ghana programme was already delivering tangible outcomes through expanded irrigation infrastructure, increased mechanisation, reforms in seed and fertiliser distribution, livestock development initiatives, and strengthened agricultural value chains. These interventions, he said, were improving rural livelihoods, increasing productivity, and creating opportunities for farmers, particularly women and young people.

He also expressed gratitude to private sector partners whose investments continue to support the sector’s growth, including the Agricultural Development Bank (ADB), HFC Bank, Stanbic Bank, Climate General, AGRA, Development Bank Ghana, BOM Agro, AMG Ghana, Sino Machinery, BEPT Agro, and High Farm Agro Machinery Limited.
