Ghana, China Hold Strategic Talks to Boost Fisheries and Aquaculture Development

Ghana’s Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture has held high-level talks with the Chinese Academy of Fishery Sciences in Beijing to strengthen cooperation aimed at transforming the country’s fisheries and aquaculture sector.
The discussions, led by Minister Emelia Arthur, form part of the government’s 24-Hour Economy and Accelerated Export Development Programme and focused on research-led partnerships to boost fish production, improve resource management, strengthen disease control, build human capacity and develop infrastructure across the value chain.
Key areas of cooperation include aquaculture and mariculture expansion, joint fish stock assessments, combating illegal fishing, climate change adaptation, biosecurity, scholarships and technical exchanges, as well as fish processing and cold-chain development.
The engagement builds on the long-standing Ghana–China strategic partnership, with plans underway to draft a Memorandum of Understanding, establish a joint working group by February 2026 and roll out pilot projects by mid-2026 to support food security, exports and sustainable Blue Economy growth.
