GNPC and Petrobras Begin High-Level Technical Talks to Deepen Upstream Collaboration

The Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC) has begun a weeklong strategic technical engagement with a delegation from Brazil’s national oil company, Petrobras, aimed at strengthening bilateral cooperation and enhancing technical collaboration in Ghana’s upstream petroleum sector.
The visit, taking place from January 19 to 23, 2026, opened at GNPC’s Research and Technology Centre (RTC) in Accra, where the Brazilian team was officially welcomed by GNPC’s Acting Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Kwame Ntow Amoah, together with members of senior management and technical leadership.
In his welcome remarks, Mr. Ntow Amoah described the engagement as a renewal of a long-standing partnership that dates back to the early years of GNPC’s formation. He recalled Petrobras’ support to the Corporation during its establishment in 1983, particularly in institutional development and strategic planning, and noted that the current collaboration is anchored in a newly signed Confidentiality Agreement that enables structured technical data sharing and joint research.
The Deputy Chief Executive (Technical), Mr. Michael Aryeetey, provided the delegation with an overview of Ghana’s petroleum landscape and GNPC’s strategic priorities. He outlined efforts to reverse production decline through optimization of existing fields and development of marginal assets, while also strengthening GNPC’s operatorship capacity to lead complex exploration and production activities.
Mr. Aryeetey further highlighted Ghana’s frontier exploration ambitions, especially in the Voltaian Basin, where Petrobras’ extensive experience in complex geological environments is expected to provide valuable technical input to support future discoveries.
Speaking on behalf of the seven-member Petrobras team, Mr. Rafael Pinto de Freitas, Upstream JV Development Engineer, described the mission as exploratory and knowledge-driven, aimed at understanding GNPC’s strategy and identifying areas of mutual technical and commercial interest that could support long-term cooperation.
During the week, the delegation will engage in data room sessions, technical reviews and interactive workshops at the RTC, focusing on upstream development opportunities and knowledge exchange.
The engagement forms part of GNPC’s broader strategy to collaborate with leading National Oil Companies worldwide to strengthen internal capacity, promote technology transfer and drive sustainable value creation for Ghana’s petroleum industry.
