Government cancels flawed public land leases as reform agenda begins

The Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, has ordered the termination of all unfinished public land transactions carried out between 2017 and 2024 that did not comply with due process, as part of wide-ranging reforms to restore accountability, transparency, and value for money in public land administration.

Speaking at a media briefing, the Minister described the decision as “a critical milestone in our collective efforts to strengthen integrity, transparency, and accountability in the administration of public lands, which are held in trust for the people of Ghana.”

He further recalled that on January 10, 2025, President John Dramani Mahama issued a directive to the Lands Commission to immediately suspend all activities connected to the leasing and processing of public land transactions.

According to the Minister, the directive was intended to protect public lands from misuse, re-establish discipline within land administration systems, and ensure that all transactions “deliver value for money to the State.”
