Gunfire erupts during NAIMOS anti-illegal mining operation in Bono

A personnel of the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) task force has been injured by gunfire during a routine anti-galamsey operation in the Bono Region, as one armed attacker was killed following an exchange of gunshots.
According to a statement issued and signed by NAIMOS Media Relations Officer, Paa Kwesi Schandorf, the incident took place on Tuesday, January 20, 2026, in a forested area along the Subinkuro–Kyeremasu road within the Dormaa Central Municipality.
The statement explained that the task force was ambushed when armed individuals concealed in nearby bushes opened fire after spotting the team during the operation.
This led to a shootout, during which one NAIMOS officer sustained a gunshot injury to the thigh.
The wounded officer was immediately transported to St. Matthew Catholic Hospital in Ampenkuro and is said to be responding to treatment.
It further revealed that one of the attackers who fired at the task force was shot and killed in the course of the exchange. The deceased, identified as Abuu Ibrahim, was pronounced dead on arrival at the same medical facility.
Despite what it described as “persistent attacks and disruptions” to its operations, NAIMOS reiterated its commitment to sustaining the fight against illegal mining and appealed to stakeholders to continue supporting its ongoing efforts.
