Ken Ofori-Atta declared a fugitive

Ghana’s former Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta, has been declared a wanted fugitive by the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) on February 12, 2025.

He is accused of causing financial loss to the state in connection with five separate transactions under investigation for corruption and related offenses. One of the prominent allegations involves the controversial National Cathedral project in Accra, where Ofori-Atta is alleged to have authorized the release of substantial state funds for its construction.

The cathedral, conceived by former President Nana Akufo-Addo as a tribute following his 2016 election victory, was intended to be funded through private means. However, reports indicate that approximately $58 million in public funds have been expended on the project, leading to public outcry and scrutiny.

Special Prosecutor Kissi Agyebeng has urged Ofori-Atta to return to Ghana voluntarily, stating, “You have two choices: either return to the jurisdiction voluntarily or the OSP will enforce your return.” As of now, Ofori-Atta has not publicly responded to these allegations.

This development is part of a broader initiative by President John Dramani Mahama’s administration to address entrenched corruption within the country.

On the same day, President Mahama ordered an investigation into the National Service Authority following the discovery of over 81,000 suspected ghost names on its payroll. This move underscores the government’s commitment to rooting out corruption and ensuring accountability in public institutions.
