Lands minister expresses dissatisfaction over monetary donations by mining companies to the Apiatse support fund

The Lands and Natural Resources Minister, Samuel Abu Jinapor has expressed dissatisfaction in a $4 million donation from the Ghana Chamber of Mines towards the reconstruction of Appiate.

President of the Chamber Eric Asubonteng on Wednesday, February 23 presented a check with Anglogold, Chireno, Goldfields and Newmont as major contributors of the total amount.

The Minister who doubles as the MP for Damongo in his remarks said the mining firms could have done more towards the redevelopment of the town considering the roles they play in the mining industry.
“A chamber of your strength, size, portfolio and members and what you are involved in, I’m sorry but I don’t think this is significant. If the Ghana Chamber of mines were to take the burden of reconstructing the community, it will definitely not be out of place at all”.

Meanwhile, Some victims and opinion leaders have called for accountability, transparency, and judicious use of the fund.
