Mahama to introduce school agricultural programme for secondary and tertiary institutions

President John Dramani Mahama has revealed plans to introduce a nationwide school agricultural initiative that will require secondary and tertiary institutions to operate their own farms. The programme is designed to strengthen food security and promote a culture of self-sufficiency among students.

Addressing attendees at the 41st National Farmers’ Day celebration in Ho, in the Volta Region, on December 5, the President stated that preparations are underway to officially roll out the initiative. As part of the programme, schools at both levels will be expected to cultivate vegetable crops and rear livestock for their own use.

“I will soon launch the school agricultural program by asking all secondary and tertiary education institutions to have a school farm where they can produce their own chicken and vegetable crops.”

He noted that the groundwork for the programme has already begun, including the appointment of a national coordinator who will oversee its implementation and ensure its smooth operation.

“We have appointed a national school agricultural coordinator and soon we shall launch this program.”

The 2025 Farmers’ Day celebration was held under the theme: “Feed Ghana, Eat Ghana in Order to Secure Our Future.”
