Mahama vows decisive action against galamsey

President John Dramani Mahama has reaffirmed his commitment to confronting illegal mining, commonly referred to as galamsey, in a firm and impartial manner, calling on citizens to play an active role in safeguarding Ghana’s rivers and forest reserves.

Addressing a graduation ceremony at the Ghana Military Academy on January 30, the President said his government has implemented robust security and enforcement strategies aimed at preventing further degradation of the country’s forests and water bodies.

He explained that a number of forest reserves and major rivers have been designated as security zones, with permanent military installations established in strategic locations to discourage and curb illegal mining operations.

“Forests and river bodies have been declared security zones. Permanent military bases have been established, and offenders have been arrested and are being prosecuted,” President Mahama stated.

According to the President, these measures are already producing positive outcomes, as some previously polluted rivers are beginning to recover.

“Rivers such as the Pra, Ankobra, and Offin are gradually recovering,” he said.

President Mahama emphasised that the fight against galamsey remains a central national priority and will not be compromised under any circumstances.

“Let me be clear, illegal mining will continue to be confronted decisively and without fear or favour,” he declared.

He further noted that addressing illegal mining requires a united national approach, stressing that the responsibility extends beyond government alone and demands collective action.

“This fight requires national unity. It is a moral, civic, and generational duty, and I call on all Ghanaians to stand together to restore and protect our land,” he said.

The President reiterated that his administration remains firmly committed to restoring the environment and protecting Ghana’s natural resources for both current and future generations.
