The resumed session of the Fifth UN Environment Assembly (UNEA 5.2)
The UNEA-5 (UNEA-5.2) resumed session is held in Nairobi, Kenya, from 28 February to 2 March 2022, to address the remaining substantive issues on the agenda, as well as a Ministerial Declaration, under the theme “Strengthening Actions for Nature to Achieve the Sustainable Development Goals.”
In preparation for the UNEA.5 session, the UNEA President has re-started the process of consultations on a ministerial declaration. The President, in a letter dated October 6, 2021, delivers an amended version of the zero draft declaration, which takes into account what has already been accomplished during prior discussions. The letter also sets a timeframe for consultations prior to the draft’s final consideration and adoption at the UNEA-5’s forthcoming resumed session.
Following UNEA-5.2, the Assembly will host a Special Session on the 3rd and 4th of March 2022 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the founding of the UN Environment Programme in 1972 (UNEP@50).
The UNEA-5.2 draft structure can be seen here.
The overall theme of the fifth session of the Environment Assembly, “Strengthening actions for nature to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals,” and the commemoration of the UN Environment Programme’s 50th anniversary, which is the theme of the special session, will be the focus of UNEA-5 side events. Please be aware that the call for proposals has already closed, and applications are now being reviewed.
