Non-residents are posing as victims of Appiatse Disaster

By Sedinam Horlonu

Appiatse, Jan 25. – According to the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO), some non-residents of Appiatse are “posing” as victims of last Thursday’s explosion in order to receive relief supplies.
The Organization stated that as a result, a 17-member Committee comprised of six survivors who were Appiatse residents was formed to assist with the distribution of relief materials to the survivors.
“It has come to our attention so we have formed a Committee to help identify those who are not part of the survivors to ensure that items are given to those who deserve it,” Mr Francis Abeiku Yankah, NADMO Coordinator for the Prestea Huni-Valley Municipality, told the Media.
He said the Organisation would work closely with the Committee to identify the actual residents of the Appiatse before essential items were distributed.
“Some of them were pushing us to give them money instead of food. But we identified that some of the supposed survivors were not residents of Appiatse.
“We have decided that we will not give the rice to them in bulk. We will give them the quantity they will need in a day and we will make sure that it is cooked at where we are housing them,” he said.
150 survivors are now accommodated at the Saint Michael Catholic Parish Hall in Bogoso, Prestea Huni-Valley Municipality, Western Region.
During a visit to the Church, which is currently being used as a temporary Relief Centre on Sunday, January 23, 2022, some survivors alerted the media that some persons from neighboring villages were impersonating as survivors in order to get relief items.
They said that some visitors who came to see their relatives who survived the explosion “queued for food” and other supplies supplied to the survivors.
Madam Adjetey urged NADMO to continue distributing relief materials to the various hospitals where victims were being treated.
The food should be extended to them. It appears that it is only those at the Centre that are being fed. Those in the hospitals rely on their relatives for food,” she stated.
Many individuals, organizations, and groups have since come to the victims’ help with a variety of relief materials and cash donations.
On Monday, January 24, 2022, the First Lady, Rebecca Akufo-Addo, distributed various supplies such as rice, detergents, clothing, and scarves to help the victims’ well-being.
The government has promised to offer temporary housing for the hundreds of people who have been evacuated.
