Atiwa East MCE jailed eight days for contempt over illegal mining

The Koforidua High Court 2 has handed down an eight-day custodial sentence to the Atiwa East Municipal Chief Executive, Ernest Ntim, after finding him in contempt of court over his alleged role in illegal mining on protected lands in the Eastern Region.

The court ruled that Ntim, together with members of his team, was responsible for the destruction of farmlands, the pollution of the Koben River, and the contamination of an important water source depended on by several surrounding communities.

The decision was delivered on Monday, December 15, after the case had experienced several adjournments. In its ruling, the court stated that the galamsey activities resulted in severe environmental harm and posed a significant risk to the livelihoods of local residents.

Ntim was cited for contempt after it emerged that he allegedly continued to participate in illegal mining operations despite an injunction application already pending before the court.

The judgment reinforces the judiciary’s strong position against illegal mining and environmental degradation, especially in cases involving public officials.
