PUWU warns authorities to halt illegal takeover of Ghana Water lands

The Public Utility Workers’ Union (PUWU) under the Trades Union Congress (TUC) Ghana has served a strong warning to the appropriate authorities, demanding an immediate stop to what it describes as the unlawful takeover and demolition of Ghana Water Limited (GWCL) properties in the Ashanti Region.

In a statement signed by the Union’s General Secretary, Mr. Timothy Nyame, PUWU expressed grave concern over the growing encroachment on, and destruction of, the company’s bungalows and lands, describing the situation as a serious risk to public service delivery, industrial peace, and the national interest.

According to the Union, the issue has persisted despite several high-level interventions, including engagements with the Government Transition Committee, the Ghana Water Limited Board, and a referral of the matter to the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.

PUWU indicated that private developers have continued to demolish existing structures, construct new buildings on Ghana Water Limited lands, and intimidate staff members in the process.

“Regrettably, despite these high-level engagements and explicit instructions for restraint, our staff have faced increased threats and harassment from private developers with some daring to demolish and erect their own structures,” the statement noted.

The Union explained that the affected properties go beyond residential use, stressing that they are vital operational facilities that accommodate key management, technical, and security personnel whose presence is necessary to guarantee an uninterrupted water supply in the region.

“Should the relevant authorities fail or refuse to take the necessary and immediate action to halt these illegal activities and protect company property before December 31st, 2025, the Union will have no option but to ADVICE OURSELVES,” the statement declared.

PUWU cautioned that any disruption to water supply arising from the situation would rest entirely with the authorities who failed to act, and not with the workers or the Union itself.

“Our struggle is not against the public; it is for the public. We believe that safeguarding Ghana Water Limited’s property today is essential to safeguarding livelihoods of many households and potable water delivery tomorrow,” the Union stated.

The Union reiterated that it would not stand by while actions that threaten public service delivery and institutional integrity continue unchecked.

PUWU has therefore appealed to residents of the Ashanti Region and the general public to rally behind its efforts to protect public property and ensure the continued provision of essential water services.
