Forestry Commission condemns killing of officer at Kalakpa Resource Reserve

The Forestry Commission (FC) has condemned in strong terms the killing of one of its officers, Mr. Raphael Ganyo, a Resource Guard with the Wildlife Division stationed at the Kalakpa Resource Reserve in the Volta Region.
Mr. Ganyo was shot dead in the early hours of Tuesday, January 6, 2026, while on routine patrol near the Zitoe Camp area of the reserve.
The Commission explained that at about 6:00 a.m., a patrol team responding to a suspected poaching activity encountered an armed individual who was concealed in thick vegetation close to the reserve’s boundary.
In the course of the operation, the suspected poacher shot Mr. Ganyo in the chest, killing him instantly at the scene.
The matter was promptly reported to the Ghana Police Service, which conducted crime scene investigations. The body of the deceased was subsequently transported to the Ho Regional Hospital morgue for autopsy.
According to the Forestry Commission, it is collaborating closely with the police to track down and arrest the suspect responsible for the attack.
Mr. Raphael Ganyo, born on March 15, 1997, was a native of Mafi Kumasi in the Volta Region. He joined the Wildlife Division of the Forestry Commission on November 1, 2021, serving as a Resource Guard within the Law Enforcement Unit until his tragic death.
The Commission has expressed its heartfelt condolences to Mr. Ganyo’s family, colleagues, and loved ones, describing him as a committed officer who lost his life in the line of duty while safeguarding Ghana’s natural resources.
The Forestry Commission has further assured that it will pursue the matter to its logical conclusion.
