UENR Hosts International Field School on Dendrochronology and Dendroclimatology

The Department of Atmospheric and Climate Science (DACS) of the University of Energy and Natural Resources (UENR) has commenced a four-day Field School on Dendrochronology and Dendroclimatology, scheduled from 12th  to 15th January 2026, aimed at strengthening climate and forest science research capacity in Ghana and the West African sub-region.

The programme, led by Dr. Caleb Mensah with support from Dr. Nana Prempeh and the DACS faculty, brings together UENR staff, students and renowned international scientists to examine the use of tree-ring data in reconstructing past climate conditions and understanding long-term climate variability and drought patterns in West Africa.

Participants include distinguished visiting scholars such as Dr. Boniface O. Fosu of Mississippi State University; Prof. Michela Biasutti and Prof. Edward R. Cook of the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory, Columbia University; and Mr. Paul J. Krusic of Stockholm University. They are joined by PhD researchers Dansiyu Lee (Mississippi State University) and Alassane Diouf (Université Cheikh Anta Diop, Senegal).

The Field School features a blend of interactive classroom sessions at the Regional Centre for Energy and Environmental Sustainability (RCEES) and practical field training at the Bia Tano Forest Reserve. The initiative is expected to deepen interdisciplinary learning, promote international research collaboration, and enhance UENR’s capacity in climate–forest science and applied climate research.
