Cape Coast Metropolitan Assembly to set up Sanitation Court in 2026

The Cape Coast Metropolitan Assembly (CCMA) has announced plans to establish a Sanitation Court by the end of 2026 as part of measures to address persistent environmental sanitation challenges in the metropolis.
The proposed court is expected to fast-track the prosecution of sanitation-related offences and strengthen the Assembly’s broader efforts to improve environmental health and protect the wellbeing of residents.
The Metropolitan Chief Executive (MCE), Mr George Justice Arthur, disclosed this during a fumigation exercise at major market centres in Cape Coast. He said intensified enforcement actions would continue under the Assembly’s citywide cleanliness campaign to ensure compliance with sanitation regulations.
The fumigation exercise, led by the Ghana Union of Traders Association (GUTA) in collaboration with LCB Worldwide Ghana Limited, covered hundreds of shops across three major markets—Kotokoraba, Abura and Anaafo—to help curb the spread of diseases.
The initiative follows similar exercises undertaken by GUTA and LCB Worldwide Ghana Limited in markets across the Greater Accra, Eastern and Ashanti regions, with plans to extend the programme to other parts of the country.
Mr Arthur expressed concern over what he described as the nonchalant attitude of some residents towards the monthly clean-up exercises, noting that indiscriminate dumping of refuse undermines collective efforts to build a cleaner and healthier city.
He urged residents, business owners and visitors to actively support sanitation efforts by participating in clean-up activities, properly disposing of waste at designated sites, reporting illegal dumping and adopting environmentally friendly daily habits, including reducing the use of single-use plastics.
The MCE reaffirmed his commitment to transforming Cape Coast into a model city of cleanliness and community pride through sustained collaboration and civic responsibility.
Meanwhile, the Vice President of GUTA, Mr Clement Boateng, highlighted the importance of fumigating market centres, especially amid lingering public health concerns such as COVID-19 and other environmental hazards.
He noted that GUTA remains committed to the welfare of its members, adding that the partnership with LCB Worldwide Ghana Limited was aimed at reducing health risks and ensuring a safe and conducive working environment for traders.
Mr Boateng expressed optimism that the exercise would yield positive outcomes for the trading community and contribute to improved public health nationwide.
