Chaint Afrique Academy Wins Prince Talal International Prize for Human Development

Chaint Afrique Academy has been named a winner of the prestigious Prince Talal International Prize for Human Development, awarded by AGFUND, for its leadership of the NETCYCLE Africa project, an initiative focused on “Closing the Loop on Waste Fishnets in Africa.”
The global award recognizes the organisation’s innovative work in tackling ocean plastic pollution and strengthening the resilience of fishing communities across Ghana.
The recognition adds to Chaint Afrique Academy’s growing list of achievements, including being a Finalist in the Afri-Plastics Challenge, its selection as one of the world’s best plastic litter reduction initiatives, and its inclusion in the NPAP Ghana plastics tracker.
Driving Impact Through NETCYCLE Africa
NETCYCLE Africa, the Academy’s flagship circular-economy initiative, has created a community-driven model that is transforming waste management in coastal areas. The project has educated and mobilized more than 100 fishing communities on the dangers of abandoned fishing gear while collecting and recycling over 100 metric tons of waste fishnets that threaten marine life and ocean livelihoods.
These efforts have not only improved ocean health but also generated more than EUR 40,000 in new income for coastal households. Participants now take part in a transparent value chain that provides new skills, financial opportunities and alternative livelihoods—strengthening community resilience while advancing environmental protection.
Scaling a Vision for Africa’s Blue Economy
With support from the Prince Talal Prize, Chaint Afrique Academy aims to expand its model to 20 African countries by 2030. The organisation says this scale-up will help drive cleaner oceans, stronger coastal economies and a continent-wide shift toward sustainable circular practices.
Recognising Leadership and Partnerships
The Academy expressed gratitude to its team and supporters, highlighting the contributions of Venan Sondo for strategic leadership and Alex Kwame for his dedication to community implementation. Thanks were also extended to the Advisory Board, Dr Ayuk Elias, Ms Nkechi Akunyili and Dr Ekua Odoom, alongside partners including Aquafil, Healthy Seas, the University of Cape Coast’s Marine School, CEFAS, Ocean Network Express and Portside Maritime Ghana.
Chaint Afrique Academy acknowledged AGFUND for the global recognition and pledged to continue championing solutions that protect the environment and strengthen Africa’s blue economy.
“Together, we are closing the loop for Africa’s blue economy—one community at a time,” the organisation said.
