EPA boss urges media to stay committed in fight against galamsey

The Chief Executive Officer of the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA), Professor Nana Ama Browne Klutse, has urged journalists to stay resolute in the nationwide effort to combat illegal mining, popularly referred to as galamsey.
According to her, despite the dangers and difficulties associated with the anti-galamsey campaign, media practitioners must not waver in their commitment to safeguarding the environment and advancing sustainable development.
Professor Browne Klutse, together with the Ashanti and Eastern Regional Directors of the EPA, Dr. Jackson Adiyia Nyantakyi and Sydney Danso, paid a solidarity visit to three journalists of the Kumasi unit of The Multimedia Group who sustained injuries while covering an anti-galamsey operation.
The journalists — Nana Yaw Gyimah, Akwasi Adomako, and Joseph Obeng — were part of a five-member media team involved in a road accident on November 6, 2025, during an EPA-led operation against illegal mining.
They suffered varying degrees of injuries, which compelled them to suspend their professional duties for several months before eventually returning to work.
The visit to Luv FM and Nhyira FM was aimed at checking on the health status of the affected journalists and evaluating their recovery progress following the incident.
EPA officials were welcomed by the General Manager of the Kumasi Unit of The Multimedia Group, Jimmy Aglah, and the News Editor, Kofi Adu Domfeh.
Addressing the gathering, Prof. Browne Klutse said she was pleased to see the journalists in good health and assured them that arrangements were underway to process their insurance compensation.
“We won’t leave you behind; we are with you and don’t forsake us too. The insurance package is underway, the documentation has kept it long but it will come,” she assured.
As a show of support, the EPA presented the injured journalists with bags of rice, boxes of tomatoes, and some cash.
Responding on behalf of the victims, Nana Yaw Gyimah expressed appreciation to the EPA for the visit.
“We are happy and thankful to be alive today. Our healing process was tough, but in all God has saved us. We do appreciate your visit as it has rekindled our relationship,” he said.
Following the engagement, the EPA delegation proceeded to visit the remaining two journalists at Channel One TV and Media General who were also involved in the accident. The visit was undertaken with the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), Kofi Adu Domfeh.
