EPA SOGAKOPE AREA OFFICE MOVES TO REDUCE PLASTIC WASTE

The Sogakope Area Office of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), has embarked on a mission to reduce plastic waste in the Keta Municipality.

Based on pilot programmes organised by the Area Office, it was identified that the volume of plastic waste reaching landfill sites is alarming.

In response, the Office decided to introduce plastic waste segregation at basic schools within its jurisdiction, to prevent an estimated 32,000,000 plastic sachets from ending up in landfills.

To achieve this, the Office teamed up with the Keta Municipal Assembly and Wasteman Ghana Limited, a plastic waste off‑taker, to donate waste bins to 81 schools across the Municipality. This initiative is expected to divert approximately 940 tons of plastic waste in a full academic year—roughly 10 months.

The programme seeks to instil responsibility and sustainable habits among students. The Area Head of EPA, Mr. Derrick Logo said The bins are not just tools but symbols of change, empowering young people to become champions of cleanliness and guardians of the environment.
He concluded by saying that, the Environmental Protection Agency and its partners seek to build a greener tomorrow—one bin at a time.
