EPA Yendi Office Engages Three Senior High Schools in Water Scarcity

The Yendi Area Office of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has embarked on a series of environmental education sessions in three Senior High Schools as part of efforts to enhance students’ understanding of emerging environmental challenges.

Officials from the EPA visited Wapuli SHS, Sang SHS, and Dangbon State SHS to deliver interactive lessons on the theme: “Water Scarcity and Its Effects on Communities.”

The sessions highlighted the major causes of water scarcity, including climate change, pollution of water bodies, poor waste disposal practices, and pressure on existing water sources due to population growth. EPA facilitators also discussed the social and economic effects on communities, such as reduced access to safe drinking water, health risks, reduced farm productivity, and conflicts over dwindling water resources.

Students were taken through practical water conservation strategies, including rainwater harvesting, reducing wastage, protecting local water bodies, tree planting, and proper waste management. Learners actively participated in group discussions, sharing personal experiences from their communities and brainstorming solutions that can be adopted both at home and in school.

Officials of the EPA noted that the engagement forms part of a broader initiative to foster environmental awareness among young people, particularly in the Northern Region where climate-related water challenges continue to intensify.

The Yendi Area Office reaffirmed its commitment to supporting environmental clubs in schools, collaborating with teachers, and sustaining similar outreach programmes to empower students as future environmental stewards.
