Ten Yilo Krobo communities rely on faecal-contaminated stream for survival

About ten communities within the Abrewanko electoral area of the Yilo Krobo Municipality are facing severe health risks as residents rely on a single stream polluted with faecal matter for both domestic and agricultural use.
The affected communities include Labolabo, Namusi, Nyamebekyere and other farming settlements located along the Nkurakan–Somanya road in the Eastern Region.
Speaking in an interview with 3news, the Assemblyman for the Abrewanko electoral area, Mr Sampson Tettey, revealed that more than 2,000 residents, including children, depend on the contaminated stream for drinking, cooking and other household activities.
He further disclosed that the same water source is used by the Labolabo Clinic in the delivery of healthcare services.
Mr Tettey explained that the absence of toilet facilities in the area has led to widespread open defecation, with human waste being washed into the stream during rainfall.
He noted that the situation has resulted in the outbreak of several unidentified communicable diseases, predominantly affecting children, and stressed the urgent need for intervention to prevent a major health crisis.
The Assemblyman therefore appealed to the Eastern Regional Minister, the Yilo Krobo Municipal Assembly, non-governmental organisations and philanthropists to come to the aid of the affected communities.
Similarly, the Dadematse (Sub-Chief) of the area, Nene Kingsley Teye Antwi, expressed grave concern over the situation, describing it as “it is a serious health threat”.
